The common mistake is adding together every device in the house. Most of them are idle most of the time — a phone in a pocket, a smart bulb, a laptop on a text document use effectively nothing.
Count only what runs simultaneously at your busiest moment, then double the total for Wi-Fi losses and background updates. A typical family evening — two 4K streams, one video call, a game — comes to roughly 60 Mbps, so a 100–150 Mbps plan covers it with room to spare.
Home-working needs are usually stated as download figures, which is the wrong half. A video call sends as much as it receives, and cloud backup, large file transfers and screen sharing are all upload.

If you're on a gigabit plan, test wired, and see 300 Mbps — your equipment or wiring caps you well below what you're paying for, and the money is going nowhere. Likewise if you never download large games and your household is two people, the difference between 300 and 1000 Mbps is invisible in daily use.
Check the wired result against the plan first. If they match and you still don't feel the speed, the plan isn't the problem and a bigger one won't be either.
