What's considered fast in 2026?

It's not just about download speed

Upload speed

Upload matters for video calls, posting content, cloud backups and gaming. Many connections are asymmetric — much more download than upload — so a lower upload number is normal. 10 Mbps upload is enough for most video calls; creators and remote workers want more.

Ping (latency)

Ping is the delay, in milliseconds, for data to make a round trip. Lower is better. Under 50 ms feels responsive; under 20 ms is excellent. For gaming and calls, a low, stable ping matters more than raw Mbps.

How to test your internet speed

Why the recommended numbers are lower than you expect

The table above tends to surprise people, because most homes are sold far more speed than any single activity needs. Netflix streams 4K at roughly 15–25 Mbps. A Zoom call in HD uses around 3 Mbps. A competitive online game uses less than 1 Mbps while you play — gaming is a latency problem, not a bandwidth one.

Put together, a household streaming 4K in the living room, another 4K stream in a bedroom, someone on a video call and a game running comes to roughly 50 Mbps. That is the honest arithmetic behind a 500 Mbps plan.

What the extra headroom actually buys

This is not an argument that fast plans are pointless. Headroom does three real things:

When more speed does nothing at all

If your complaint is that video calls freeze, pages hang before loading, or games feel laggy, upgrading your plan will very likely change nothing. Those are latency, Wi-Fi and packet-loss problems, and they are unaffected by the Mbps figure on your bill. We explain the difference in Mbps vs ping.

The tell is simple: if a single big download runs fast but everything feels slow, more bandwidth is not your fix.

Most families land somewhere between 100 and 300 Mbps this way. If your current plan is far above that and you're paying a premium for it, you have a case for spending less.

Don't judge your plan by one test

A single reading tells you about one moment on one device. Before deciding your connection underperforms, run the test wired if you can, run it again at a busy evening hour, and compare.
