Where to Put Your Router for the Best Wi-Fi

Most routers live wherever the cable enters the home — a hallway cupboard, behind the TV, on the floor in a corner. That habit costs real speed: moving a badly placed router can double or triple Wi-Fi performance in far rooms, for free. Here's where it should go, and what's silently eating your signal.

The golden rules of placement
- Central, not cornered. A router radiates in all directions like a lamp. In a corner, half its coverage is wasted on the neighbour's wall. The closer to your home's centre, the more even the coverage.
- Elevated. On a shelf or cabinet, roughly 1–2 m off the floor. Signal spreads slightly downward and outward; a router on the floor wastes coverage into the slab.
- In the open. Not inside a cabinet, not behind the TV, not buried in a wire nest. Any enclosure attenuates the signal — a closed media cabinet can act like a signal cage.
- Near where it matters. If perfect central placement isn't possible, bias toward where you actually use the internet: home office, living room TV, gaming desk.
- Antennas at mixed angles. If the router has adjustable antennas, point one vertical and one at ~45° — devices receive best when the antenna orientation varies.
What actually blocks Wi-Fi
Not all obstacles are equal. This is roughly how much different materials hurt:

Two surprises on that list: mirrors (metallic backing reflects the signal) and aquariums — water absorbs the 2.4/5 GHz frequencies Wi-Fi uses remarkably well. A router with a clear line of sight down a hallway beats one that's technically closer but behind a fridge.
Keep it away from interference
- Microwave ovens — leak radiation exactly in the 2.4 GHz band; streaming near a running microwave visibly stutters.
- Baby monitors and older cordless phones — same band, constant chatter.
- Bluetooth speakers — also 2.4 GHz; a busy Bluetooth device right next to the router adds noise.
- The neighbours' routers — in apartment buildings, 2.4 GHz is a crowded party. If your router lets you pick channels, 1, 6 and 11 are the only non-overlapping 2.4 GHz choices; on 5 GHz, auto is usually fine.
2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz: which room gets which
Modern routers broadcast both. The trade-off is simple: 2.4 GHz reaches further but is slower and more congested; 5 GHz is much faster but fades sooner. Devices near the router should live on 5 GHz (or 6 GHz on Wi-Fi 6E/7 gear); the far bedroom may honestly get better results on 2.4 GHz. Most routers handle this automatically with "band steering," but if yours exposes separate network names, you can assign devices deliberately.
When placement isn't enough
If your home is large, L-shaped, or built from concrete, one router may never cover everything well. In that order of preference:
- Run a cable to the far zone — a wired access point or even a wired TV/PC is the most reliable fix of all (Wi-Fi vs Ethernet).
- Mesh system — two or three units that share one network name and hand devices off smoothly. Much better than repeaters for whole-home coverage.
- A single Wi-Fi extender — acceptable for one stubborn room, but it roughly halves throughput for devices connected through it, so use it as a last resort, not a strategy.
