Slow internet has a short list of usual suspects, and you can identify yours in about fifteen minutes if you check things in the right order. Work through this list top to bottom — each step rules out one layer, so by the end you'll know exactly who to blame: the Wi-Fi, the router, a device, or the provider.

This single measurement splits the problem in half: if the wired number matches your plan, everything below the router is fine and your problem is Wi-Fi (steps 2–4). If the wired number is also far below your plan, skip to steps 7–10 — the problem is the router or the line itself.
Unplug it for 30 seconds, plug it back in, wait two minutes, retest. It's a cliché because it works: routers are small computers that run for months without a reboot, slowly accumulating memory leaks, stuck connections and bloated internal tables. A weekly scheduled reboot (many routers can do this automatically) keeps things clean.
Run the test in the room where internet feels slow, then again standing next to the router. A big gap means signal loss — thick walls, distance, or a badly placed router. This is extremely common and completely fixable: see our router placement guide. If moving the router isn't enough, a mesh system or a cable to the far room (Wi-Fi vs Ethernet) closes the gap.
Every phone, TV, console, camera and smart plug shares the same connection — and Wi-Fi devices also share airtime, so even idle chatty devices steal performance. Log into your router's app and look at the client list. If someone is torrenting, cloud-syncing or streaming 4K while you work, that's your answer. Routers with QoS (Quality of Service) can prioritise your important traffic.

If you pay for 300 Mbps and your router is a Wi-Fi 4 relic, the router is the bottleneck — no setting will fix that.
Slow only between 19:00 and 23:00? That's peak-hour congestion — too many households sharing the provider's local capacity. Run tests at different times of day and note the results. If the evening number is a fraction of the morning number, that pattern is strong evidence to bring to your provider.
Cloud photo backups, OS updates, game launchers pre-loading patches, and sync tools all consume bandwidth silently. On Windows check Task Manager → Performance → Network (or Activity Monitor → Network on a Mac) while the connection feels slow — the culprit is usually right there at the top of the list.
If one device is slow and others are fast, the connection is fine. Old laptops with dated Wi-Fi cards, browsers drowning in extensions, or malware quietly using the network can all masquerade as "slow internet." Test the same spot with a different device to confirm.
Some plans slow down dramatically after a monthly data allowance is used up. If your speed falls off a cliff near the end of each billing cycle, check your usage in the provider's app — the fix is a bigger cap, not a new router.
If a wired test right at the router is consistently far below what you pay for — at all times of day, with everything else unplugged — the problem is upstream: the line into your home, the provider's equipment, or an honest gap between marketing and reality. Call support armed with your numbers: wired test results, times, dates. Concrete measurements move support conversations much faster than "it feels slow."
