Wi-Fi vs Ethernet: How Much Speed Are You Losing?

Real-world numbers on a gigabit plan

Ethernet loses almost nothing because it's a dedicated, interference-free wire. Wi-Fi is radio — and radio has to fight physics.

Why Wi-Fi is slower than cable

Latency: the difference you feel

Speed isn't the whole story. Ethernet also gives you a lower and much more stable ping. Wi-Fi typically adds 2–10 ms of latency and, more importantly, adds jitter — small random spikes that cause rubber-banding in games and frozen frames in video calls. When Ethernet is worth the cable

Phones, tablets and laptops that move around the house are what Wi-Fi is for. The winning setup in most homes is a hybrid: wire what stays put, keep the airwaves free for what moves.
